After a c-section, there are several layers that need to be closed, the last being the skin. There are generally two types of skin closure - sutures or staples (occasionally glue is used to bond the skin). The sutures used are stitches that are woven through the skin in a skilled manner, which cannot be seen by the naked eye. The result is a smooth scar with two beads either side, holding the ends of the suture in place. Staples are quite literally that - staples. There are several that are put in place along the wound, holding the skin together Most Obstetric doctors will use sutures as it is thought they heal better and leave less scarring. Other doctors prefer staples in some cases. If you have a c-section, you can always ask about the type of closure they will perform.
Both types of skin closure will require removal by a doctor or midwife after several days unless they are dissolvable. I'm not an expert in closing skin after a c-section so if there any Obs reading this post, I would appreciate your input and preference!
If you've had a c-section, what type of closure did you have?
