An update to the PAID maternity leave entitlement by government

By Marley Henry · 16 November 2020

An update to the PAID maternity leave entitlement by government. These are entitlements set by law.

This time I have added several more countries. I have listed the PAID leave entitlements offered, not the actual leave entitlements. For example in the UK we get 9 months partial pay but can take an additional 3 months unpaid and our jobs will still be available.

What you can get will vary depending on your personal situation and the length of time you have been employed, so please do check our your country's government website and employer contract. You may be lucky and get an employer that gives more than they are obliged to! . It varies incredibly from country to country and it's such a shame that in some places, very little paid leave is offered. It is so difficult going back to work just weeks after having a baby. Not only are you recovering physically but leaving a small baby while you return to work can be really difficult. It can have an impact on things such as breastfeeding. . Some places have extended financial support in certain circumstances like if you have twins or triplets. These are the bare minimums, you may well be entitled to more. Japan for example also has 'childcare leave', an additional benefit for parents which can extend the paid time of after having a baby. . Paternity leave varies from country to country too. In the UK dads/partners are allowed two weeks leave which the government will pay around £150 per week. . What about you? Do you know what you're entitled to? If your country is not listed and you know what the entitlement is, please share!
