Bleeding after the birth of your baby is normal

Bleeding after the birth of your baby is normal. It can last anywhere from 2 to 6 weeks and sometimes even longer than that! You may find that the first week you'll bleed quite heavily and may even pass some small blood clots as your womb is emptying it's lining.
After a caesarean, you will still have some bleeding but you MAY find it's lighter and stops sooner than after a vaginal birth.
If you find that you are regularly losing blood clots or they are particularly large (the size of a satsuma orange) then be sure to mention it to your midwife or doctor. Also speak to your care provider if you are soaking through pads your sanitary pads every hour or more - postpartum haemorrhage doesnt always happen at birth, it can happen days after the event.
If you breastfeed you'll probably notice your womb contracting and more blood loss during a feed which is totally normal.
After the first week you may notice that the blood loss gets lighter until it finally stops. It will be bright red to begin with, turning pink or brown as things start to ease off- similar to a menstrual period.
How soon after birth did you notice bleeding stopped?
