"Breastfeeding causes saggy boobs" Heard this one before?

If you are concerned about breastfeeding for fear it will may your boobs droop, it's good to know that actually it's the amazing changes in the body during and after pregnancy that can cause this to happen for some women. Body and breast changes are a normal part of pregnancy and breastfeeding and research has shown that it is pregnancy itself, not breastfeeding that can cause breasts to sag. The research also showed a link between the number of pregnancies a woman had had and the effect it had on her breasts. . During pregnancy your breasts will start to grow due to an increase in milk producing cells, blood and fatty tissue but it may not always be noticable until a few days postpartum. Most womens breasts will fill with milk and possibly even engorge a few days after birth regardless of whether she is breastfeeding or not.

Aside from the actual pregnancy, there are also other factors which come into play such as smoking - this can have a negative impact on elastin, a protein in the skin, genetics, skin type and gravity. It's good to wear a comfortable and well fitting bra to suport your breasts during and after pregnancy. . I'm often asked is there anything that can be done to prevent or minimise sagging breasts and I would say perhaps! Ultimately you have to take the factors above into consideration but I would suggest avoiding rapid weight loss post partum, when you eventually stop breastfeeding, do it gradually. The more gradually you wean, the easier fat tissue will be able to re-deposit in the breasts. If your baby/toddler self weans abruptly (which is pretty uncommon) you might want to use a breast pump gradually over a period of time, reducing the frequency each tday. Maintain a healthy diet, drink plenty to keep your skin hydrated to preserve elasticity and practice good posture, avoiding slouching when you feed. It will do your back the world of good too! . . . #breastfeeding #pregnancy #postpartum
