Going to visit someone who has just had a baby?

By Marley Henry · 2 December 2022

Going to visit someone who has just had a baby? Call ahead first and make sure it's convenient. In fact, even if someone doesn't have a new baby, I never just turn up at their door (unless it's my mum 😁)

Some other considerations for visiting New parents:

  • Don't visit if you're unwell

  • Avoid offering unsolicited advice (this is totally different to someone clearly needing support or being in a dilemma and wanting suggestions)

-Avoid smoking just before arriving

-Wash your hands

-Don't expect hospitality but do offer to put the kettle on for them.

-Ask if they need anything

  • If you have children with you, take snacks for them and don't let them run wild through the house. Be sure to clear up after them before you go.

  • Don't kiss the baby

-Don't over stay your welcome (30-40 mins is usually plenty unless it's clear they want you to stay!)
