Having a second child can be overwhelming

By Marley Henry · 15 February 2021

Having a second child can be overwhelming. Thoughts of "how can I possibly love this child as much as my first" may plague your mind.

It's normal to feel like this, and it's normal to feel guilt at the prospect of not being able to give to your second like you did with your first. Your first baby will be the only child that will ever have you all to themselves for a period of time and thats OK. You will not be able to stretch that to your second baby. They will however benefit from other things.

You will be a more experienced, confident parent, they will have an older sibling as company as well as you, they will learn about sharing love a lot earlier than your first, potentially making it an easier transition if you had any more children.

Subsequent pregnancies are often tougher anyway, due to you not being able to rest the same as first time round. Having a supportive partner really helps.

You will most likely find that as soon as your second baby is born, all worries about dividing love between your children will disappear. . . . . . . . #motherhood #family #support #ppd #pnd #postpartum #parenting #midwife #midwifemarley #privilege #postpartumsupport #parenthood #dads
