Sciatic nerve pain in pregnancy

By Marley Henry · 13 January 2021

Sciatic nerve pain in pregnancy..... the only time when I've ever suffered from it! I remember clearly at 14 weeks pregnant, all of a sudden I had this shooting pain from my bum down my leg. It was made worse every time I walked. 😫 . The sciatic nerve is a huge nerve that runs down your leg from your lower back. Pain may come in the form of a dull ache, shooting or stabbing feeling. Some women wven complain of a tingling or burning type pain. . Lumbar spine problems such as a herniated disc are often a cause of sciatica in people but during pregnancy, the cause of sciatic pain is often down to other reasons. Sciatic like symptoms are common with lower back pain and also may be caused by unstable joints and even muscle tension! . So what can you do to help it? Certain stretches, yoga positions and massage can help relieve discomfort. Sciatica is not actually caused by pregnancy but if you do happen to suffer from it when pregnant it could be to do with increased weight and fluid retention putting pressure on the nerve or even your centre of gravity being pushed forward meaning you subconsciously clench your buttocks more, pinching the sciatic nerve! Have you ever suffered from sciatic nerve pain suring pregnancy or otherwise?
