Swipe for considerations ๐๐ฝ Parents- if you're not ready for, or not feeling up to visitors, don't be afraid to say so.
A simple " we're still settling in and will let you know as soon as we're up for visitors" will suffice.
If you are happy for visitors, still don't be afraid to set boundaries, making it clear you aren't there to be host. Unfortunately a small number of people will expect this. Many of us are worries about offending family and friends, but ultimately, it's you and your baby that should be centered.
You could say things like:
"Yes you can pop over briefly. I will be resting with the baby, though, so be sure to bring yourself some refreshments or feel free to help yourself when you're here". Or "Yes, sure you can swing by for a bit by yourself. Could you bring some milk with you too please?"
If you're not ready for people to hold your baby and feel awkward about saying so, either A. Don't have visitors yet, or B. Wear the baby in a sling. If someone asks to hold them, say, "Maybe next time, I've just settled him/her, and they will kick off if they are moved right now!"
Partners - it is your job to protect the space and boundaries. If your partner is feeling vulnerable, particularly around your family, please say something.
