The red fluid lost after birth (lochia) contains more than just blood. Its mixed with amniotic fluid

By Marley Henry · 5 October 2023

The red fluid lost after birth (lochia) contains more than just blood. Often, a gush of amniotic fluid comes out after the baby and is red in colour as its mixed with blood. If its a large amount, this can sometimes give the impression that the blood loss is huge!

It's important to keep an eye on vaginal loss after birth and let your care provider know if you are soaking through pads quickly.
