To all those who had a tiresome night last night

By Marley Henry · 10 May 2022

To all those who had a tiresome night last night. I know your eyes are burning, you probably feel ready to throw up, are totally touched out and feel like your brain is a big mound of jelly.

How much feeding is too much?

Cluster feeding is normal at times when baby is having a growth spurt and is usually short lived. If breastfeeding is continuously like this night and day, it may be worthwhile getting in touch with an infant feeding specialist, particularly if the baby is not gaining weight.

Babies who aren't latching well will feed constantly as they are unable to get the amount of milk they need. This can cause nipple pain, damage and a reduction in milk supply.

Poor latch can be due to a number of reasons including positioning, body tension and tongue tie in the baby, so if possible, visit an infant feeding specialist trained in recognising these issues. Tongue tie has also been linked to reflux, enlarged tonsils and breathing/ sleeping problems to name a few. Bottle fed babies can also be affected. I'll go into more detail on tongue tie in another post.

I have been training with Carmelle @gentle_births_and_beyond since last September to become a tongue tie practitioner and am looking forward to helping babies and families when I qualify!
