Ever felt an intense zapping pain in your vagina that felt like it's come put of nowhere? One minute you're walking along fine, the next you're doubled over after having an electric shock sensation shoot through your crotch? The sensation quickly disappears and you're left wondering what on earth just happened!

It's probably lightening crotch. A phenomenon that can often occurs in the last trimester of pregnancy. There are several theories as to what causes it -

Perhaps increased movements from the baby putting pressure on nerves around the cervix, or maybe the head descending down and putting pressure on nerves in the pelvis is what's causing those shooting pains.

Lightening crotch is not dangerous or a sign that something’s wrong with your pregnancy or the baby. You may find it eases with movement. Alert your doctor or midwife if lightning crotch lasts for more than a few seconds, or if it's accompanied by other symptoms like vaginal bleeding, fever or contractions, or if the sharp pains are persistent and don't subside.
