False. They're not fish. It's a common misconception that human babies have some kind of super power when they are born which enables them to breathe in water into their lungs without drowning. What they do have however is something called the 'diving reflex' which involves them holding their breath disappearing at around 6 months of age.
The diving reflex is also known as the bradycardic response; also exhibited by seals and other aquatic animals, the instinct may be a vestige of our ancient marine origins.
It works like this: Infants up to 6 months old whose heads are submerged in water will naturally hold their breath (do not try this in the absence of a qualified baby swimming instructor) At the same time, their heart rates slow, helping them to conserve oxygen, and blood circulates primarily between their most vital organs, the heart and brain. The survival response keeps accidentally submerged babies alive much longer than adults would survive underwater Cool huh? . . . . . . . . . . #babyswimming #babyspa #babymassage #newbaby #babyswim #swimming #swim #love #kids #massage #reflex #spababy #newmum #facts #massagebaby #babyspasidoarjo #sidoarjo #swim #newmom #newborn #breathe #renangbayisidoarjo #babymassagesda #love #midwifemarley #midwifery #life #renangsidoarjo #midwife
