Gestational diabetes occurs when you have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy

Gestational diabetes occurs when you have high blood glucose levels during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes usually develops in the third trimester (after 28 weeks) and typically disappears after the baby is born. Women who develop gestational diabetes during pregnancy are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes later on in life. It's the hormonal changes in the second and third trimesters of pregnancy, along with the growth demands of the foetus, that increase a pregnant woman's insulin needs by two to three times that of normal. Insulin is needed to take the sugar from your blood and move it into your cells for energy. If your body cannot make this amount of insulin, sugar from the foods you eat will stay in your blood stream and cause high blood sugars. This is gestational diabetes. It occurs in around 1 in 20 pregnancies and is usually detected through routine blood sugar tests or urinalysis tests when you visit your doctor or midwife in pregnancy. . . . . #fetalpositioning #easierbirth #maternitycare #preggers #prenatalbodywork #wheresbaby #gailtully #postpartum #birthphotography #love #obgyn #midwives #midwiferycare #labor #doulas #hypnobirthing #medical #birthcenter #hospitalbirth #positivebirth #studentmidwife #doctor #diabetes #support #family #health #mother #maternity #ostetrica #nursing
