If you experience a very long labour that appears to be slowing down or simply not…

If you experience a very long labour that appears to be slowing down or simply not progressing, it could be down to several reasons.

Perhaps the baby is not in the most optimal position to put pressure on the cervix, helping it to dilate. Google 'the miles circuit' or check out my reels for a video demo. Changing into different positions can help to realign baby in the pelvis making the descent down easier, thus helping things to progress.

Perhaps contractions aren't very strong or are not close enough to effectively dilate the cervix. Try nipple stimulation to increase production of the oxytocin hormone which is required in large amounts to cause strong contractions. You can do this by using a breast pump or simply rolling your nipples between your fingers.

Perhaps there is an element of fear or apprehension inhibiting oxytocin production, slowing your labour down. Try dimming the lights, playing low music or getting your birth partner to give you a gentle massage. Creating a calm environment is key.

Sometimes resting helps to relax your body and mind, along with encouraging baby down. Lay on your left side with your right knee extended right over. You may want to use a cushion to support your bump.

It's normal for labour to take many hours and there's not always a need to jump in and speed things up with a synthetic oxytocin drip if labour has started spontaneously. If there are no concerns over yours or your baby's welfare that would require an expedited birth, try the tips above first to see if that helps push things along.

Did any of the above work for you? If so I'd love to hear your story 😊
