It is a good idea to pack snacks into your hospital labour bag as you need to keep nourished and hydrated throughout labour. But what is a good snack to take? Many mums find that they can’t eat a single thing and taking small sips of water is all they can manage. Your digestive system slows down due to all the energy being taken up by your uterus but its a good idea to have snacks to hand that will give you that much needed energy. Snacks that are easy to eat such as dried fruits, crackers, grapes, vegetable sticks and bananas can be really handy when you need a little boost! Oat cereal bars and peanut butter sandwiches are good snacks for energy, especially if your labour has been going on for a while and you have skipped a meal. Keeping hydrated is key too. Isotonic drinks may help with energy as well as hydration. Snacks and isotonic drinks are recommended for low risk labours. If you have diabetes, an epidural or other form of intervention/ high risk labour, it will probably be suggested that you dont eat or drink due to the risk of having a C-section. If you cant drink, you will be offered a drip to keep you hydrated and given sips of water or ice chips. . . . . . . . #hospitalbag #pregnant #midwife #midwifemarley #pregnancylife #pregnancy #thirdtrimester #obstetrics #baby #newmum #epidural #labour #birth #obgyn #laboranddelivery #childbirth #education #nursing #midwifery #midwifelife
