Soon after the birth of your baby your breasts wake up!

By Marley Henry · 10 October 2019

Soon after the birth of your baby your breasts wake up! once the placenta is out, your brain informs your body that a baby has been born and its now time to increase milk supply. For the first few days you will produce small amounts of yellow colostrum (the first milk) which the baby will consume frequently. Around days 3-4 however, your mature milk starts being produced and often causes engorgment. . Primary Engorgement occurs when the breast tissues swell due to blood and lymph fluids filling the tissues surrounding the alveoli (milk making glands) in preparation for milk production. . This often comes as a surprise to many new first time mothers and can be uncomfortable until the milk is drained off. You may find your breasts are big and hard to touch. Getting baby to latch on may be difficult so hand expressing some milk of first to soften them may help. Primary engorgement usually lasts for no more than a week until your body adjusts to the amount it knows your baby needs . . To help ease any discomfort, nurse often, try massaging the breast during feeds and try to feed from both breasts for at least 10 mins each side . #breastfeed #breastfeeding #breastmilk #breastpump #breastfeedingmom #normalizebreastfeeding #breastfeedingmama #momlife #motherhood #lactation #breastfeedingsupport #lactation #baby #breastfeedcover #midwife #breastfedbaby #breastmilk #skintoskin #milk #pump #love #newborn #baby #breastfeedinginpublic #postpartum #midwifemarley #cottonblanket #breastpumping #newmom #bhfyp .
