The fourth trimester is a term used to describe the first 3 months of a new mother and baby's life. It often refers to the fact that babies have been removed from the security of the womb where they were never cold, uncomfortable, tired or hungry, and are now living in an environment where they may experience these feelings. The first 3 months are often exhausting, not just with the lack of sleep but with a newborn that only finds comfort in being next to mum for warmth, comfort and food. You may have heard people saying "put the baby down before you spoil him", but the truth is you can't spoil a tiny baby with affection - hold them as much as they need. The only way they can communicate a need is to cry. Babies don't cry for nothing; If they have been fed, changed, are not too hot/cold and you're sure they're not suffering with tummy pain/gas they they may just be feeling lonely or insecure in need of a hug. That's why babies will fall asleep in your arms but not in a crib, thats why they stop crying the moment you pick them up. Some babies are more needy than others - I've personally had 2 extremely high needs babies and it's exhausting. The way I got (and am getting) through it is to use a sling and to keep reminding myself it won't be like this forever. Priortise chores- what really needs to be done and what can wait? Having helping sibling hands to hold them whilst I showered was also useful if dad is at work! Once a baby reaches and age where they are more independent ie sitting, picking things up themselves and interacting, things do become easier. This is often from 6 months onwards. If you're experiencing a tough 4th trimester, hang in there mama! 💟 . . . . . . #4thtrimester #fourthtrimester #sling #babysling #babywearing #postpartum #ppd #pnd #newborn #baby #newmom #40weekspregnant #overdue #pregnancylife #postpartumlife #postnatal #givingbirth #summer #midwife #doula
