When I had my first child I was just 18 years old

When I had my first child I was just 18 years old. Shortly after giving birth I was transferred to the postnatal ward and thought I should check his nappy. I was in for a shock - his poop was not what I had expected, it was black, thick and like tar!! I thought there was something wrong so ran to grab a midwife who of course told me it was normal. . Of all the books I had read about pregnancy amd birth, I hadn't learned about meconium and how tricky it was to clean up. Or the fact that it can go on for a couple of days. . Meconium is composed of materials ingested during the time the baby spends in the uterus: intestinal epithelial cells, lanugo (hair), mucus, amniotic fluid, bile and water. It's appearance is very dark green or black looking at birth and changes over the coming days when it is flushed out by milk. By day 2/3 you should see a slight change in the colour to dark green and by day 5/6 it should be yellowish. Be prepared for the first few nappy changes to bit a bit messy!! . . . . . . . . #newborn #baby #birthprep #pregnancystory #midiwfemarley #pregnancy #birth #diapers #babytips #midwife #midwifery #betty #healthybaby #lesrn #education #pregnant #newmom #newparents
