Remember this one?

By Marley Henry · 23 October 2019

Remember this one? I had a message asking about bump size so thought this would be an ideal repost. Heard this before? I have! Each and every time I have had a baby, there has been a comment about how big or small I am. All women come in different shapes and sizes when pregnant. Shorter women may appear to have bigger bumps than taller women, women with higher bmi's may appear bigger than those with lower bmi's and so on.

Fundal height measurement is usually done in the UK from 25 weeks to get an idea of how the uterus (and subsequently baby) is growing. It's not 100% accurate so is only used as a guide.

Generally speaking at 25 weeks gestation, the measurement from the pubic bone to the top of the womb (not top of your belly) will measure around 25cm give or take 3cm each side. Each time you visit your midwife the messurement should increase by approximately 1cm per week. If there is any indication that the baby is not growing as they should be (ie the fundal height measurement hasnt changed from one appointment to the next or is measuring much smaller than expected) you might be referred for an ultrasound. In most cases the growth scan is normal but occasionally a problem may be noted with the placenta or reduced amniotic fluid. If you measure overly big, it may be because of increased fluid. Measuring fundal height is not accurate in all circumstances however. These include women who are carrying twins, who have fibroids and those who have a very high BMI Most of the time the size of your bump is fine, no matter how big or small you look on the outside 😊
